Toronto Police Issue Consumer Warning

By: Waterloo Movers @ 4:52 pm

The Toronto Police have issued a warning to consumers regarding fraudulent and unscrupulous moving companies. See the attached press release for the details. Westmount Moving encourages all customers looking for moving services to follow the advice issued by the Toronto Police Services:

  • Use a moving company that has been used by friends of family or ask the company for references;
  • Limit the amount of deposit that you provide to a moving company;
  • Contact the Better Business Bureau or Consumer Protection Branch to see if there is a complaint history for the company;
  • Beware of very low rates which are often too good to be true;
  • Ask for contracts prior to the date of the move; and
  • Read contracts thoroughly and don’t sign anything you disagree with or do not understand.

Advice for Consumers

By: Waterloo Movers @ 7:33 pm

On Monday May 10th, Joe Gagnon, President of Westmount Moving, was interviewed by Tim Parent on the CJAD morning show regarding Industry Canada’s proposal to tighten rules for moving companies due to complaints from consumers ripped off by crooked operators.

Joe gave some advice to anyone choosing a mover to first ensure the mover is accredited with an organization such as the Better Business Bureau or the Canadian Association of Movers.

Another simple way to see if the mover has been around a while is to look in the Yellow Pages. If a mover doesn’t have an address and is operating from a cell phone – that is a good indication that they are a “fly by night” operation!

Hear a clip from the interview:
