World Food Day is Everyday

By: Heather @ 2:30 pm

According to the Canadian Health Calendar, World Food Day is on October 16th. While this day has passed, that doesn’t mean that we should be any less aware of how many people need food, water and basic everyday supplies that we often take for granted. At Westmount Moving and Warehousing we understand this need and try to be as involved in our community as possible, whether it is donating money or lending a helping hand. As a proud part of the Kitchener-Waterloo community, we wanted to bring attention to the Food Bank of the Waterloo region. On October 17th (and on other dates as well) they will be donating food and supplies to families in need.

They are currently searching for volunteers to assist in the following tasks:

  • Drivers and assistants to help with scheduled pick-ups (the drivers must have G license and a clean driving record).
  • Volunteers are needed in the warehouse as food support assisting the food team with moving product.
  • Also needed is general warehouse work with forklift experience being an asset.
  • Lastly, food quality control including corporate and perishable food sorting.

Get your Kids in Gear!

By: Heather @ 7:50 pm

Get your Kids in Gear!Let’s face it, Canada loves hockey. We love to watch it, play it, talk about it, laugh about it and even yell about it (sometimes). Hockey is in our blood and we love it. However, sometimes those who want to play hockey simply cannot afford it. Skates, padding, jersey, shorts, helmet, protection, hockey sticks…you name and the price goes up and up. Many children watch their idols skate around on TV and want to be like them. Because of the cost, this dream of playing the sport they love to watch is sometimes not a possibility for many children. However, there are programs to change all that.

The Sun Life Financial Kids in Gear program is just one. This 2013-14 season Sun Life Financial with assist with the collection and also the purchase of hockey equipment for the children who need a bit of help to play this wonderful game. The program kicks off Monday Oct 7th and runs until Sunday, Oct 19th at various locations around Kitchener-Waterloo. Drop off sites include the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium and Sun Life Financial offices around the region. If you wish to contribute new or gently used hockey equipment, please find the donation bin closest to you.

You can also drop off your gear at Kitchener Rangers home games on October 11th, 14th and 18th.

The joys of Labour Day weekend!

By: Heather @ 6:31 pm

Happy Labour DayOh the joys of Labour Day weekend! The classic, ‘last weekend before summer ends’ trip with the family and/or friends! The family get-togethers and feasts, the parties and the memories! What would we do without it?

Well, people did survive without it for quite some time. The day only was made official in 1894 to celebrate various labour associations’ strengths and contributions and to give a much needed day of rest. However, we, in modern times view this day a little different. Sure, it could still be a ‘day of rest’ but for most, it is exactly the opposite!

For many, Labour Day is viewed as the end of the summer season and a last chance to make trips or hold outdoor events! For teens and university students it is the last chance to organize parties before school starts again. In some neighbourhoods (maybe yours), there are fireworks, BBQ’s and other public events. Let’s not forget football season starts and many teams play their first game of the year during Labour Day weekend.

If moving/relocating is in your Labour Day weekend plans we have a few tips that will make the move as easy as can be! These tips could make your move quicker and more efficient, giving you plenty of time to enjoy your Labour Day weekend! Jump in a pool, go biking, see the sights, catch up on your gossip and most of all, rest up and take full advantage of the time off.

Tips and Moving Checklist

  • Determine what you’re going to keep, discard or donate

Kitchener local represents for Fitness Professional of the Year

By: Heather @ 6:06 pm

Dave Smith: Fitness Professional of the Year! What an honour and what a title! While a week ago only a few knew his name, this past Sunday during the closing ceremonies of Canfitpro, Canada’s largest annual fitness conference for fitness professionals, Smith’s life story and all of his accomplishments were heard and recognized by millions.

What does it take to become the Fitness Professional of the Year? Being one of three finalists for the award, what made Dave Smith stand out among the rest? As with many things in life, what it all boils down to is inspiration! The award acknowledges fitness experts for more than just developing a program that helps their clients shed a few pounds; to be considered for the title, the trainer must show leadership, amazing technical skills and of course, inspire and motive their clients. As well as embracing those three qualities, Smith stood out for another reason. THE INTERNET. Yes, by utilizing something so natural and known to everyone, Smith was able to develop a unique way to keep his clients inspired and ready to go, no matter where they were.

Smith was aware that life is busy, hectic and sometimes getting to a gym is near impossible! Smith made workout videos that could be carried out pretty much anywhere and did not require gym equipment. As well as making them accessible to his clients, he changed them up every few weeks so his clients wouldn’t get bored.

From this invention, Smith began to accumulate a large following of subscribers and connecting directly with most of them through e-mail. Personalization, dedication and a love for fitness is what made this Kitchener local stand out among the rest!

Tour de Force – Finished

By: Heather @ 8:11 pm

In the early morning hours before it was even light out we scrambled (after a great night out in Ottawa in celebration of our completion of the tour!)

We needed to eat breakfast, get on our bikes and get downtown before 7am to lead the 5th annual Army Run out of the gates! A tremendous honor that we were all present for and proud to be part of.

Even though it was quite cold out and many of us shivered and huddled for warmth as we waited for the starting gun to lead the over 10,000 participants of the 5k run off the starting line; the energy of the organizers was quite obvious and infectious as they greeted us all and thanked us for our part in the fund raising effort for Canada Company. They also thanked us for being there to start the race and gave us our instructions. The starting gun went off and we sprinted away with the runners not far behind. At the 5k marker we left the course and headed back to the hotel to start the pack up and good bye process.

Another great Tour de Force completed! We formed memories and relationships that will likely last a life time and not even twenty-four hours later as I write this; I’m confident that I’m probably not alone in saying that I miss the gang already!

Great job team; until next year when we meet again!
